Aged 57 at the outbreak of war he was too old to serve in the forces. Instead he remained at Westminster to educate new generations of boys all the while hearing news from the fronts of the deaths of his former pupils. He wrote this poem during the Play Term of 1914.<\/p>\n<p>Ere Antic Law would count him man,<br \/>\nHe filled his life&#8217;s appointed span,<br \/>\nAnd warring &#8216;gainst an empire&#8217;s lust<br \/>\nHath laid the flaxen head in dust<br \/>\nWhere our old foemen&#8217;s friendly soil<br \/>\nWith quiet crowns the brief-borne toil.<\/p>\n<p>Ah happy lad, no doom for thee<br \/>\nOf palsied hand and quivering knee,<br \/>\nOf ashes choking lively fire,<br \/>\nOr garlands trampled in the mire<br \/>\nNor that worst loneliness when all<br \/>\nThy peers in age have heard the call.<\/p>\n<p>Nor shalt thou heed if idle Fame<br \/>\nForget to blaze abroad the name,<br \/>\nOr but bare letters on a stone<br \/>\nSome dim and cold remembrance own;<br \/>\nEnough that from this hallow&#8217;d ark<br \/>\n&#8216;Twas duty sped thee to the dark.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>John Sargeaunt taught Classics and English Literature at Westminster from 1890 until 1918.
